Board Cards

A   B

In this example there are only two cards Five or lower on the board. This means that the nut low is simply the lowest two cards ranked Five or below that do not appear on the board, i.e. A-3. Hand B therefore wins the low pot with a Six low: 6-4-3-2-A.

The best low that Hand A can make is 7-6-4-2-A. In fact, this is only the third nut low. Hand A can also be beaten by 5-3 for a low of 6-5-4-3-2.

In this final example, neither player has the nut low A-2 combination among their hole cards. Which of the two is the better low hand here?

  Board Cards

A   B

Despite the three low cards on the board, Hand A does not contain sufficient unduplicated to qualify for a low at all. Hand B therefore takes the pot, using the 8-7 from his hole cards together with the three low cards on board to make an 8-7-6-5-4 low.

Incidentally, an 8-7-6-5-4 low is the worst possible low in Hi/Lo poker. However, it was still enough to win the pot here!
